Chapter 25: Reparations

Apprehensive

Caleb stood in the rain, letting the water plaster his hair to his forehead and sting his eyes. He hadn't cut his hair since he arrived and it showed. It was long enough for a stumpy pony tail in the back. His clothes were soaked through, his shoes squeaked as he shifted his weight. It was a harsh winter rain, with a chill wind besides. He wore only jeans and a faded t-shirt, which did nothing to protect him.

But he did not feel cold. He knew he should, but somehow didn't. He was either too numb to feel it anymore or he was in the middle of a dream. He couldn't remember why he stood out in the rain so the latter seemed likely. Why was it raining so harsh? Had he fallen asleep outside again?

The rain felt cleansing, washing away some internal strife he didn't know he had. Or maybe his ignorance. At least some of it. He hoped it would deter the local denizens. He doubted it would. They enjoyed stalking him too much, giving out bits and drabs of information like a precious commodity.

Pulling Answers

Caleb didn't want to breath, lest either Tomaq or W.S. turn their focus to him. He willed himself to blend into Tomaq's stark apartment.

"It no longer matters," Tomaq said.

"It matters to me; it's my life." W.S. gripped the window frame hard, restraining herself.

Chapter 25: Reparations

Dropping By an Old Friend's Place

Caleb spent a long time deliberating whether he really wanted to leave campus or not. Now that he had Tomaq's address, a place to go, he wasn't sure he wanted to use it. It seemed that every time he left campus something horrible happened to him. He couldn't ignore his laboured breathing from his mild walk across campus. Would he even make it that far?

He was looking for an excuse not to confront Tomaq. Maybe he should take Ariana? No, this was personal and he didn't want Ariana involved. Dierdre? No --- she didn't support talking to Tomaq at all. He didn't want to be like Tomaq, but some things he did alone.

Before he could talk himself out of it he grabbed a bag and left campus. It wasn't far, but he decided to catch a bus anyway. He didn't trust his stamina, nor his resolve. He tried not to think of it, watching the houses and craning to see street signs so he knew when to get off.

Pure Intentions

Caleb arrived at morning practice unsurprised to find W.S. already working on her katas. She was soaked through from the drizzle, but didn't seem to feel it. Caleb kept his rain jacket on as he joined her. It wasn't long before he was focusing more on not passing out from exhaustion than on the rain.

W.S. put a hand on his shoulder to stop him. He hadn't even noticed her stop. "You are sick. Go home."

Caleb stood straight and faced her. "I don't feel sick. I'm just... out of practice." It was lame and they both knew it.

Pushing Boundaries

Dierdre said nothing more. They sat in mutual silence until Dierdre left him to the cold. Caleb stayed outside long enough for the chill to seep into him, then went back into Commons for a snack before they closed down for the night. The warmth of the dining hall had trouble expelling the ingrained chill. It felt good, though Caleb couldn't explain why. It was familiar, it reminded him he was still alive.

He took his coffee and grilled cheese sandwich out to find a table, and found Rocky in the back corner. He sat alone in the nearly empty hall, staring out the window. He looked haggard and weary. A plate of untouched fries were in front of him, as well as an unopened notebook. Caleb almost didn't want to disturb him; he could guess what weighed on his mind.

Rocky probably didn't want him to help, anymore than Dierdre did. Or Alexis herself, for that matter. Why should he push it? Was he doing it for Alexis, or for himself. A little of both, if he was honest. But if Tomaq had information --- if he knew what Q had once known --- he doubted Rocky or W.S. would ask him about it. He walked up to the table with his coffee and warm sandwich and sat down across from Rocky.

Chapter 25: Reparations

A Curtain of Rain

Caleb didn't know where he would find Rocky, anymore than he knew where to find W.S. Or Tomaq, for that matter. He sat beneath the covered concrete patio outside Commons and stared out at the steady rain. It was already dark, and a bit cold, but Caleb pretended not to notice. It felt good to breath clean air.

He ran his hands through his hair. It was getting shaggy and long --- he hadn't gotten a haircut in months. Possibly not since he arrived at Reed. His hair was long enough to put into a ponytail. Soon it would look like Tomaq's. Caleb shoved his bangs out of his eyes and made a note to get a haircut over the weekend.

Even if he knew where Rocky studied or where his dorm was, he wouldn't necessarily be there. Not after what happened that morning with Alexis. Both W.S. and Rocky may still be with her. In theory, he could wait until the morning to ask W.S., but he didn't want to ask W.S. about Tomaq. He didn't want to bring up anything to do with that subject. She was still a little touchy around him, even if she did agree to teach him.

Fragile Connections

Caleb walked over to Commons with Ariana, a little early for dinner but he'd skipped lunch doing homework. They didn't say much during the walk over. Caleb felt too brain dead to string coherent sentences, trying to connect his reading to cogent thoughts for his physics class. He promised himself he wouldn't miss anymore classes this week.

They ran into Aiden and Rose getting food, and joined Miles and Dierdre at the table. Caleb wondered if they usually arrived at Commons early to avoid the dinner crowd. "Hello, you two." Dierdre smiled. "And how was your afternoon?" She smiled as if she was in on a conspiracy.

Ariana scowled at her insinuation, and pointedly sat on the opposite side of the table from Caleb.

Where Are They?

Caleb sat on his bed, thumbing through the thesis for background information on Reed. There wasn't a whole lot; Caleb felt like there had to be something of more use somewhere, but couldn't find any good references in the book. The general population of fae wasn't the focus of the thesis.

Ariana knocked and entered. "Do you ever intend on going to class again?"

Caleb looked up at his clock. "Oh. I meant to go today. I just... didn't."

Chapter 25: Reparations

Unwanted

Caleb's lungs burned and his legs felt ready to buckle. He hadn't been working that hard, they'd just finished the beginning forms. And yet he felt as bad as if he'd been through one of Tomaq's more strenuous workouts. W.S. pretended not to notice today, perhaps punishing Caleb for not taking her advice. Or maybe she couldn't be bothered to care. Caleb couldn't tell.

"W.S.!" Rocky bounded down the hill, nearly falling over in the process. Caleb bent over double trying to regain his breath. W.S. turned to watch Rocky half-slide on the wet grass. "W.S.," he panted again. He looked almost as bad as Caleb; he wasn't used to moving so quickly. "Alexis, she's... you have to come talk to her."

W.S. nodded and started toward Alexis' dorm with Rocky. Caleb stood up to follow, but W.S. saw his intention. She turned to him with a sharp look that needed no interpretation. Caleb backed a step, and she started up the hill with Rocky.

Chapter 25: Reparations

Plenty Of Questions To Go Around

Caleb ate slowly and said little throughout dinner, soaking in the social atmosphere. He felt out of his depth, like his social skills had atrophied. His memories started about the time his social life began sliding. He held onto the hope it was temporary. Commons filled, and their table slowly emptied as his friends returned to their studies.

Miles said good-bye to Dierdre with a quick kiss, then only her and Caleb remained. She turned her chair to face him.

"You don't have to wait for me," Caleb said. He still had half a plate of fries in front of him.
